Support.
These sort of thing should be opt-in. Failing that, there should at the very very least be an opt-out available.

Support, I agree with all the points made before me
Also I get excited for forum pings and its always a let down when it turns out to be for The Times because it doesnt really include anything I wanna see usually >.< Im pretty active and I usually know whats going on and I dont need a user-run forum group to give me a summary

Hi! I am on The Times team and I'm talking to Limor about this right now actually. Some really good points were made and I understand/somewhat agree especially with how Katt and Tori said it (though less passionately lol).

I've read this whole thread I created an anonymous poll to get feedback from people on whether or not to remove pings
((poll is here >

))
Some things are being worked around and adjusted based on feedback here

I don't agree with this at all.
I do enjoy reading the Times, it's a very professionally done newsletter that efficiently recaps the things that happened that month. I prefer to be pinged, even if everybody doesn't. Why take something away from thousands of people when the couple dozen that don't like it can ignore it with the click of a button. Some newbies might not ever know about the Times if they don't get pinged. If I don't want the read the Times that moth I just delete the ping, it doesn't take much to do so.
I also don't agree with making a ping list. As said before, newbies may never discover the Times unless they get pinged, so that's taking away the opportunity to most people who sign up, even though some may still find it on their own. Also, there are hundreds of players who do want to be pinged, it would take so long to compile a list of people to ping and then you have to deal with the hassles of all ping lists. Organizing the users into dozens of posts, sifting through each one to find out who changes their username, I just don't think it's a very practical approach.
That's just my opinion, I think it would be too much of a hassle not to ping everybody and if you wish not to be pinged, simply ignore them.

Its not often I come back to dispute something Ive already said yay or neigh to, but I feel these things really do need to be addressed as some points were missed.
Limor
Im sorry Limor I know you only want to improve the times but you DO realize this is not something YOU need to make a poll about? This is for Krin to see and decide, because HE is the one making the pings we want to stop. HE is acting unfairly to groups across the board by promoting One Single Group. I know youre putting in a lot of effort, and its commendable, but so does EVERYONE ELSE who makes user-run groups. I do not feel it is fair he has decided this ONE group gets favourable attention just because it repeats what hes already said in OTHER pings he ALREADY MAKES.

I feel as if you have missed the point. Its fine if YOU like to read and YOU like to be pinged, and that can STILL HAPPEN with a user-run ping list. When I am pinged BY AN ADMIN, I expect Officially run and maintained threads About The Site. And the thing about these pings you say I can ignore? I CANT Ignore them, because they are ADMIN PINGS. I am FORCED to see them, and I am FORCED to make them go away. If I could Ping Block Krin, sure, whatever, this wouldnt be an issue, but I CANT. When I get a ping I HAVE to go see what it is if I want it to go away. Sure, I can just click the X, but the point here is I Shouldnt Have To.
Also, there are plenty of ways for the newbies to discover the times? I am not saying They Shouldnt Get Pinned. I dont care if they get pinned, which they do. Pinned posts get PLENTY of attention. Besides that, if theyre active on the forums, then theyll probably see the fairly active Times Group in the Groups and Guilds subsection.
Plus, none of that refutes our other points. Such As:
- it being the ONLY user-run thing to get GLOBAL pings is an unfair advantage and divide between the user-run groups
- it being NOT about sylestia more and more, creating an issue where it seems that Krin is advocating for anything they publish in the times, which can lead to a lot of murky and tricky territory
- it NOT being a professionally done newsletter. It has gotten Official Site Mechanics wrong before, which got pinged globally BEFORE they were fixed. Never got a global ping with the new information, so who knows how many people are out there thinking a site feature works incorrectly because of this
- it is Actually Quite Biased to Limor and friends when you read further than the first heres what happened recap.
This isnt simply a case of ignore and move on. Its a much bigger problem, ESPECIALLY for Krins image. If he continues to promote the times, should he not also focus on other user-run groups to give them a fair shot in the limelight? Should he not proof read the approve the times if he, the ADMIN of the site, is going to promote it to all his users? Again, if I could simply ignore it, I would, but I am constantly forced to make the click to discard a ping I just could have not gotten in the first place.

For all the reasons Tori has stated way better than I ever could, the Site Wide pings to the Times need to stop. If not because it's USER RUN content and a ping FROM THE ADMIN OF THE SITE, than because the content is starting to focus less and less on Sylestia itself.
It might be a minor inconvenience but it's also one for what I would imagine is rather a majority of players between those who would prefer to stay off the forums entirely and those of us who expect sitewide pings for official site news. One where all Krin has to do is... Not Ping Unofficial Content.
By all means, please, continue creating the Times. But you should be making the Times for users who will fully appreciate your work and not the entirety of the site who may eventually, if not already, start to get annoyed by being constantly and forcibly reminded of its existence.

I'm a little confused. I've never been pinged for the Times in all of my time on Sylestia. Ever! And I've been here 4 years?
Also- Support
If they have a common upload schedule, it wouldn't be hard for someone who wants to read it to just go look at it when it is updated since it is so easy to find on the main forum page. If they don't have a common schedule, that would be harder and a ping list would be needed.
Or perhaps a link on the main page? That way no one needs to be pinged and even newbies could find it if they're interested.
