dont support, i like the times pings, i'd never remember to read the paper otherwise and i like the paper, makes sylestia feel like a real place with it's cute local paper. i get the user run aspect but there's other pings i don't care about, and while an unsubscribe would be cool it's simple enough to delete them

I disagree with Tori's points. Limor *asks* Krin for a sitewide ping. He doesn't do it automatically. Limor created something Krin likes and wishes to share with all the users, but he doesn't have to if he doesn't want to. It's a comprehensive publication that covers many aspects of the game, as opposed to breed specific or interest specific clubs.

To say it's not fair to other user created clubs and groups is a bit dubious. If they put in the hard work to make something that could be interesting to most people on the site, then there's no reason they couldn't ask Krin for a sitewide ping as well. And it would be up to him whether or not to grant that request. But limiting their groups to certain things pretty much guarantees the vast majority of peeps wouldn't appreciate notifications.

Personally, I wouldn't want notifications from say, a faelora club, an artist club, or a Harry Potter fan club for example. Because those aren't topics that cover 75% or more of the aspects of this game. The times can claim that they do. That's why I'm ok with them getting a site wide ping and not every other user run club out there.

But frankly, it's one ping a month. If anyone feels it's not fair, then click the little X to get rid of it and move on. It's really that simple. :)

And there are people who don't want a ping from the Times, so why are they forced to get it? It doesn't matter how much coverage the Times has, if people don't want a ping, why should they be subjected to it?

Just as you don't want a ping to a Faelora club, I don't want a ping to the Times. It doesn't interest me at all.

Just because it 'covers 75% or more of the aspects of the game' doesn't mean the 'vast majority' of users want a ping. Most could be like me, just endured it, because it never occurred to me to make a suggestion to opt out.

It is just one ping a month, but it is a ping that I think 'oh, Krin updated something' or 'Someone replied to me' only to find out that, nope, it is just a ping to the Times, which I can easily find on my own.

I think something that would vastly help, though it would probably require a lot of work, would be to create the ability to 'subscribe' to a thread, or create pinglists so that players that *want* the pings can opt in, while others who don't want the ping can avoid it.

As for new players, etc.. not knowing about the Times, that is what word of mouth advertising or just exploring on their own is for. Since the times is Pinned, it will always be up near the top of that particular forum, so much easier to find than most other clubs.

Edit: My point is, if anyone could ask, and potentially get, a site wide ping for their club, then why shouldn't a fae club, or Harry potter fanclub, or any other type of club out there, get the ping, even though, as you said yourself, you, and potentially the vast majority of users, wouldn't want it? Just because they cover a non-sylestia topic? The times does that, according to other users. Just because it covers one aspect? What if the club covers a huge aspect, such as the LG or Breeding, of the site?

I don't really care about the 'fairness' aspect, since, as you said, other clubs could ask for the ping. I just don't want the ping, because I am simply not interested in the vast majority of subjects the times covers. (every once in a while I have found an interesting (to me) subject, but not very often). I have developed a dislike of forced pings where I can't opt out, (not from sylestia, but from other games)

Just to chime in since it sounds like a lot of players here have quite a few misconceptions about the Sylestia Times.

So first off, the Sylestia Times was originally headed by Everlost (and a handful of others) and was first posted in August of 2013:

https://www.sylestia.com/forums/?thread=5642

At the time, Faiona and I thought it was super cool and amazing that our own community, which, keep in mind, was basically brand new at the time, was willing to put forth effort and create a little online newspaper. We thought it was awesome. You can even see how right off the bat we gave it attention:

https://www.sylestia.com/forums/?thread=5642#8

Over the years, the Sylestia Times has gone through various iterations and lots of different players have taken their turn at working on content for it or taking the head lead. Since Faiona and I have always felt it was sort of like a tradition for Sylestia, I was always happy to throw out a site wide ping whenever a new edition would be posted - as it had been that way virtually from the beginning. I have always been approached by whoever the lead was at the time beforehand making sure that it was okay. And I have never had an issue doing that.

However, since it seems that the Times has overbooked its welcome, I spoke with Limor and I have decided that I will no longer do site wide pings for it and asked that they shift it to a Club instead.

Reading through these posts here though... it almost sounds like some view the Times as some sort of personal collaboration where I (the admin) am supporting a personal player directly through the guise of an online newspaper... and that is not at all the case here. So I just wanted to provide some more insight on this debate to clear that up.
