Two quick questions:

1. I've experienced two different kinds of re-generators - one kind which I think is older, where you're extremely limited in which traits you can regenerate (for example, you have a 4 point regen but when you go to regenerate it, you have to pick trait A in G1 and trait B in M1, those are your only available options), and a second kind which I think is newer, where you can assign your trait points almost however you want, except you can't pick restricted traits of course, and sometimes there are a few (newer?) non-restricted traits you can't pick. So my question is what determines which version of the re-generator you're going to get? And is there a way to tell which version you'll get and/or which traits will be available to you before re-generating? It would make a big difference to whether or not I would buy certain regens, for example.

2. I see that on people's profiles, you can see how much gold they've earned, and I was wondering what gold gets counted towards that? I assume it counts gold earned while exploring maps, but does it also count gold earned from selling all the armour you find doing that? Does it count any items or pets you sell, including ones sold to other users? Does it count gold you got from the currency exchange? Just trying to understand how much of my gold is actually new currency I've earned, versus how much is just diamonds I already had that I finally cashed in for gold.

Yes to all those. I'm not actually sure if an item sale sent through your inventory with a CoD counts but everything else does.

you have the regenerators backwards- it's the older ones, like ny-vene and kelpari, that let you pick whatever trait of the pre-regeneration traits you like. Starting with the lupora (any traits that didn't move locked) Krin has learned how to refine it.

The Most restrictive in trait selection is Nyte, the first one after lupora to be revamped, and expected to continue into the faes. With nytes you can typically only pick from traits that the sylesti had prior to revamp (if said traits got broken into three like most of their muts, you can pick one of the three in any of the slots)
Some nytes had instances where they'd completely lose a trait point if they followed the rule so they get to bend the rule a little (eg, sylesti has an G1 and G3. G1 trait remains a single trait rather than splitting, G3 trait moved to G1 slot. The nyte would thus theoretically lose a trait point since both traits are now G1, so it gets free pick of the viable G3s to replace the lost one)

There is currently no way to see what traits a nyte had unless you're the owner, so if you're looking to buy a regennable nyte but want to know the traits you'd have to pm the owner or take a chance

See guide to regeneration and revamps, there's a post on what traits are available for regen in each species

Nytes are also the first ones to get access to regenerator v2, which I really need to add to the guide, but it's the one that shows you the list of what visible and hidden+carried traits the pet had, and assign those in turn. Regenerator v1, which is based on the regular generator, cannot do hiddens/carries.
At the moment v2 isn't very streamlined and can't do the colour application, so you have to assign the nyte's traits in v2, regen, then do the colours in v1 (becomes available only after you finish assigning the traits. I expect it it would lose some part of the trait data if you could get to v1 before v2)

Ahhhhh I see, okay. Thank you so much for explaining, and I will definitely check out your guide!

That sucks that the newer regenerator (and the one that will be used going forward) is the more restrictive one, but I understand why they're doing it that way, so you don't just get to pick whatever traits you want, it has to be based on what the pet already had.

So the nytes and the luporas both use v2, but everything else uses v1?

Also, does anything besides a revamp cause pets to be regenable? I have some pets that I think have become regens since I've owned them, but there hasn't been a revamp since I joined, so I'm a bit confused...

no, only the nytes use v2- Lupora use v1 only, just with locked trait slots where they had traits that didn't move (like with restricted traits)

And you'd have to provide me a link to the pet(s) in question to be able to work that one out?
