1: Genetic tests enable you to see a pet's carried traits. These are traits that aren't visible but the pet still has and can pass down to it's offspring.

To add to Fireflick's response, you can also see hidden traits if a pet has been genetically tested. These are traits that are hidden under a visible trait that can also be passed down to a pet from a parent/previous generation, but isn't visible in the previous generations, but may become visible in a later generation depending on how the breeding pans out.

Carried traits are Green.

Traits with hidden traits are Purple.

Traits with no hidden trait, but are visible, are Blue.

Also, if a pet is untested, and has hidden traits, they'll appear as normal Blue traits since without the pet being tested, you can't see the hidden, much like you can't see the carried without the pet having been tested.

Here's an example of a pet with hidden and carried traits:

If you ever want a pet(s) tested, I offer free genetic testing here:

There are also quite a few other users who offer free testing as well in the Groups, Guilds, Clubs, and Services forum.
