Diamonds are a currency and can be used to buy things, predominantly from the Diamond shop, but not only- other things include getting more stables, reclaiming pets you have Released, unlocking premium tier in fest calendars, and buying save slots for the wardrobe and generator.

When it comes to traits, first
Mutations = M1, M2, M3 (the ones that add things like wings, different tails, effects, jewelry)
Genes = G1, G2, G3 (the patterns on the body (and wings/other non-body parts if those are naturally part of the species without a Mutation adding them)
Traits = all of the above

Traits also have the term Trait Points- a single carry is 1 trait point, 2TP could be either 1 visible trait, or two carries, etc.
(note that unless a pet is made via the Generator, it will need to be Genetically Tested for genetics information of what Carried and/or Hidden (carries, but covered by a Visible trait rather than nothing; Sylestia uses Mendelian inheritance/ Punnett squares) traits may be present.
Diamonds can be used to purchase the infinite-use Excpetional Genetic Scanner (for scanning enemy mobs automatically) and Exceptional Genetic Test Kit.
Many players also offer free genetic testing services in the Groups, Guilds, Clubs, and Services subforum for people who do not have a test kit.

Generated pets: Only can have as many TP as their Essence allows for (2 for regular essence, 4 for enhanced and mystical, 6 for divine (with the caveat that divine generated pets are infertile)
(starters are effectively Generated pets)
They cannot have any more traits added after their creation.

Tamed pets: Caught or otherwise obtained from the wild, or obtained from the Scale Shop, Arena (ny'venes), or Puffadore Petshop
A Tamed pet can have a total of one Genetic Mutator used on them.
Lesser Mutators may give either one carry or one visible trait at random
Greater Mutators give one visible, non-restricted trait of a player's choice to a viable slot (slot doesn't already have any trait genetics in it)
(Lovely and Lucky Mutators allow for specific traits, including the restricted traits Valentines Lace, the puffadores' Angelic trait set, and Lucky Dust)

Exclusive pets are made or obtained in certain ways, such as Brewing during fall fest or prizes from contests. How many TP they have will depend on the manner of creation.
They cannot have any more traits added after their creation.

Offspring: Pets bred from other pets.
What traits they have depends on their parents' genetics and the Mendelian Inheritance-based RNG involved.
