What is the best way to make gold? Also I seem to be stuck on a quest that doesn't end. Am I doing something wrong?

On the quest, it'd depend on the quest in question? so I'll ask the most common issue: are you fighting all the battles you run into in the area where the quest has directed you?

mm, yeah, it really is just 'fight enemies until you fill the progression bar' (region 1 and 2 areas basically treat winning battles as their equivalent 'taking a step')

(you may also want to see about looking to buy/unlock your third pet slot at sanctuary of saerielle; umbra forest areas are set up with the expectation that the player's using a three pet party)
