The Monsters We Are

When the wind whispers words to the moon, as the sky darkens to utter blackness, the feeling in my soul becomes darker, stronger, the shadow within, climbing out from the dark abyss that is its captor it consumes me and changes me my demon reveals itself.

The world has become dark, filled with new, evil presences. Almost every normal seeming human is affected, the words of the song, it changes people for the worst. A lot who have been through this try to dodge the song, it never works. Some humans have never been affected, they are looking for the source, trying to stop the madness intertwined within the fabric of the universe.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Its a dark, cruel world out there. Dont think, even for a moment, that you are safe. Anyone may seem nice. Dont trust them. Deep inside, we are all monsters. I learned this the hard way. Before I tell you anything, I should start from the beginning.
Everything, believe it or not, was once normal. The world was in perfect order. But then they came. The demons so wicked, so cruel. They wanted to enslave humanity. I know, I know this all sounds like a fairytale, but trust me, its all true, and soon enough, youll be one too, most likely. Something protects us humans from becoming truly wicked, for some of us, the protection is stronger. Something pure inside our heart, and it fights the shadows. Because of this, the demons got frustrated. They still managed to enslave us for half our lives. At night. At night, when the wicked song of the demons comes, most everyone becomes a monster, a demon. Except for those with purer hearts. Since the demons have control of the monsters for the night, they order them to kill and serve. They kill the ones who havent become monsters. And they serve, mindlessly to the demons who cursed them. There is still a flaw to the demons curse. At daytime, the monsters become humans again and forget about the past night. They never know anything about what happens, they think all is normal. Im telling you, you could be one of those monsters, or the demons may just have not spread to your area. Just be careful.
I was one of the purehearted.
Chapter 1
I left at dawn, and was surprised to see so many others were purehearted. We moved swiftly, making sure not to make any noises. We left our hometown behind, and all of us headed into the wilderness, the place where we could hide. As the sun rose, the last of us made it through the trees, slipping through the final shadows silently. We soon came across a cave, we all went inside, and patched up the entrance with rocks. A small stream ran across the cave, it lead right to a small pond, we drank the semi-clear water. None of us spoke for quite a while.
Finally, a man that looked about in his thirties spoke. We cant just wait here, we'll starve. We have to do something, get rid of those demons!
His reply was silence. We should at least work as a group, the pond can only stay for so long, and soon well need food. How are we going to get food if we stay cramped up in here!? The monsters only come at night, we still have plenty of daytime.
I spoke. Hes right. We cant just do nothing. Im sure every one of you has a loved one whos back there. I broke into tears. I-I just want my family back. I wiped my tears, they werent going to help me. I needed to find the source of the song, to vanquish it, to destroy it. My rage was building up, the only thing i wanted to do was crush the song. Everyone who had escaped looked at me. I didnt care. At that moment, I felt like becoming a monster myself. I panted, breathing in shallow, quick breaths. Then I collapsed. I feared I would become a monster right there and then. Fortunately, I did not. But I forget what happens next, because i fainted.
As the others had told me, I lay there for hours, unmoving. They gathered resources and hoped for the best. When I had awoken, I heard arguing.
We cant wait for her to recover much longer- The voices were distant, I strained to hear them, and in my weak state, you can imagine how well that went.
I got up, shakily. I wobbled a bit, but everything was fine. I walked closer to the voices, hoping they saw I had awakened. As I walked, I came to the main room of the cave. A huge argument was held, everyone was forced to choose a side. Nobody even noticed I was awake.
For the first side, the leader was a girl, she looked about fifteen, more or less anyways. She had red hair and pale skin, her eyes were a deep blue. I say we should stay here, its our best bet, and there will be plenty resources.
The other side of the argument, the leader was a boy. He looked fourteen. He had short black hair, covering one of his eyes. His skin was very pale. And the one eye that I saw was a golden amber color. We cant just stay here. Theyll find us eventually, and there are not unlimited resources, they will soon end. Its better to leave now.
I shook my head. There was an idea, but I wasnt sure anyone wanted to hear it, much less side with me on it. But, still, I spoke. Quiet, both ideas are interesting, but I have a better one. Everyone glared at me. There should be groups, of three, four, or five people. That way its not as dangerous if you get tracked. Each group will travel different routes, and we will all meet up at chosen areas. At the areas, you can talk to others, and report the progress on the song and other things. I looked at everyone. I was not afraid of them.
Do we get to choose groups? Someone yelled from somewhere.
Thats what I figured. I said. No more than five people in a group though. The argument stopped, and everyone went joining groups and looking for others. No one asked me to join a group. I understood why.
Except, the boy that had been the leader of one side of the argument came up to me. Interesting idea you have there. He said.
Thank you, I guess. I said cautiously, I knew he wanted something, but what was it?
Hey, can I join your group? I dont exactly have one.
Me neither, so I guess you can. He wanted something more, I could sense it.
He smiled, it looked rather creepy. My names Cole.
Well, nice to meet you I trailed off, something was definitely eerie about him. I just couldnt put a finger on it. But Id better get ready with supplies and everything. I said cautiously.
As I went on, checking things that we did have, I found that there were a few buckets some people had carried with them. I took one and scooped fresh water from the pond, then went to the trees near the cave and weaved them together with a spare thread. Once I finished, I covered the top of the bucket in the leaves, preventing the water from sloshing or spilling.I carried it back to the cave, where groups where making little piles of their belongings and supplies, and everyone was lucky to have brought a pack with at least some food. I carefully placed the bucket in my bag, so that it wouldn't spill. Inside I found the leftovers I had eaten for dinner. Crusts of bread and a hard-boiled egg. Only then did I realize how hungry I was. I devoured some of the bread, but left the last piece and the egg for later, ignoring the protests for more food as my stomach growled. I closed my pack and wondered what else I could get. I wasn't big on weapons, but I knew how to craft a bow and arrows. Though I couldn't exactly make arrows yet, I found a sturdy twig near the tree I had gathered leaves from. I then went to the pond and dunked the wood in it, carefully bending it into shape. With more of the thread I had happened to have, I carefully measured out how much i needed, cutting the thread with several ripping motions. I then tied the thread to both ends of the twig and plucked it once, to make sure it would hold. Then I slung my makeshift bow over my shoulder and went to look for straight enough sticks to serve as arrows. Though I had no feathers and no stone for a spear-head, I collected some sticks hoping I would sometime manage to get the materials needed to complete arrows, and perhaps maybe some leather or another material to make a quiver. I placed the straight sticks and my bow into my pack, closing it once more. Everyone seemed ready to leave. They all looked at me as if I were their leader or something. "Why are you looking at me?" I asked. The man who had said the first words when we left spoke. "You had the idea." "But I don't want to be the one to tell everyone what to do, just to make suggestions." I protested. The girl with red hair, who seemed alone came up to me, and whispered, "Just pretend, I can help, by the way I'm Annka." She said. "Everyone, we shall meet at the Greenlands in three days' time." She announced. Several people gasped, including me, for the Greenlands were endless forest, and it was easy to get lost there. "But at the northern boundary." I said, for that was the area closest to where we were, and no one would have to go into the Greenlands by themselves. Everyone turned, gathering their possessions, and headed out. Annka went to get her pack, as I did the same. When both Cole and Annka were ready, we set out. Cole and Annka barely said a word to each other, instead talking to me as if they were enemies. Finally, I couldn't stand it anymore. "Why don't you talk to each other?" I blurted rudely. Annka and Cole both stared at me. "If we are all in this group we work together and talk to each other." I said, trying to explain my blurt. "Well-" Annka began to say, when Cole interrupted. "Why is she even here?!" He said, clearly angry. "Because she asked, like you." I answered, then groaned when they began fighting. "How many times have I told you to stay out of my way?" Cole asked Annka "You're just always in my way." Annka retorted. Cole growled, and that quieted Annka down. "What was that?" I asked Cole. "None of your buisness," Cole grumbled. "I'd be happy to tell you, I thought you knew!" Annka said cheerily, despite the fight that had just taken place. "See what I'm talking about, you're always doing things that aren't necessarily good, but also not good for me! She doesn't need to know yet!" He said, and his voice became ragged. "You're doing it right now!" Annka said. "All the more reason to tell her!" "Tell me what?" I asked. "Oh, Cole is a-" "Not now, Annka." Cole said. "But, she deserves to know!" She replied. "Just tell me!" I yelled. "I was born with a curse...." Cole started "It has nothing to do what is happening now....but whenever I get angry I become a wolf." Cole said. Shocked, I began to think it over. For fighting purposes, he would be a good ally. For other purposes.....well it could be good or bad, depending on the purpose.
