You can find the one-use ones on the Trade Broker.

The directions are Trade>Trade Broker, then search by selecting Type>Genetic test kits

Or you can pay 1500 diamonds in the diamond shop to get one with unlimited uses.

It's really rare to get essences. I've gotten one I think but that's it.

It is very rare, but they do tend to accumulate over time. Right now the most reliable way to get essences is through nurturing, but even that is a rare occurrence.

Thankfully though there are quite a few activities on sylestia that yield essences, even if the rate is low (mission sacheles, battles, nurturing, playing jixie's jamboree).

Is there a place to get snares apart form the market too?

Right now the only place you can get strong, standard, and lesser snares from the markets in the towns. There's also a snare available in the diamond shop, which can catch any pet.
