Why was I only able to gen one pet? Is it because I just joined?

Generating your pet is a scripted event that everyone goes through, so yes, it's because you just joined. :)
Everyone generates their own starter pet~ You can generate more later when you get an item called an "essence"~ for the moment, I'd suggest just getting to know the site and playing for a bit.

If you're looking for another pet though, allow me to offer you one as a welcoming gift? :) She's a stat bred pet, so she's a lot more powerful then a pet that you'd be able to generate or catch in the wild. She's infertile and unable to have babies, but she'll do good on the battle portion of the site. There's a festival that starts at the end of the week of which the minimum recommended level is 10~ I think she'd help you out a lot. :)
