i want to add a sylesti to my party but the button to do that won't let me why?

Have you expanded your slots?
Go to (Explore->Map->Viridian meadows)Esior's Haven-> Plaza-> Expand party max -(trainer)
Or from 2 to 3 the plaza at Sanctuary of Saerielle (Umbra forest).
