The most I've seen on one was eight. What is the maximum number, though?

I'm pretty sure it is eight. (I've never seen a stable with more.)
1 tab- free
2nd tab- 25,000
3rd-75,000
4th-100,000
5th- 250,000
6th-500,000
7th-1,000,000
8th-??
The 7th and 5th tab I'm positive about the pricing the others I'm not so sure.

While I'm not certain of the max number, most people do not buy more than 8 because the next tab is so expensive that it's cheaper to trade your gold for diamonds and get a whole new stable.
