It says i need points to put traits on generated pets. How do I get points though?

You need to use an essence. You can buy them on the trade broker or very rarely find them in other places. The regular essence has 2 tp, so one visible max. The enhanced has 4tp, and so does the mystical. Color may swing depending on which essence is used.

I don't think so.... I know there are some contests where the admins let you design a 3-vis dream pet with a theme, they randomly draw a winner from those who followed the rules, and then your pet is designed.

from essence no you can't get more then 2 vis but if you want to be technical you can re-create a pet with more visual if you manage to get a pre-revemp pet that was not re-generated yet. ( you can't access to all the trait with pre -regen but nothing stop you to use an essence for the new trait and start a project)
