How do I do it? I tried to buy one and it won't let me.

To buy an egg all you have to do is click on that egg, and it'll pop up a little confirm purchase button. What price was the one you wanted? They all vary in prices, with the cheapest being around 500 scales and the most expensive being around 2400 scales, so you might have just not had enough?
edit: Also, the eggs refresh every 15 minutes, so if you tried to buy one right as they refreshed it might have given you an error that the egg was no longer available.

The egg I was trying to buy was 480 scales. I have over 500 scales. It just popped up a bigger picture of the egg with no info or asking if I was sure I wanted to purchase it.

That problem is due to your monitor size being too small. If that happens again, you can just zoom out to make the purchase button visible.
But I have now made it so you can scroll up/down without the box following you.
