This is probably a silly question, but I've noticed that most seem to breed one theme pet with the opposite gender of the same theme. As you would, it's the normal thing to do. But I was messing around with the breeding grounds preview feature and I can get some really cute pets by breeding theme pets with non theme pets or pets of different themes.
My question is, would doing that be something that's looked 'down on', for lack of a better term, in this community? I totally get they'd be worth a lot less in terms of selling, but just for my personal pet collection would that be something someone would think poorly of?

That's not a bad thing, however breeding two pets from the same themme is the only way to get a pure breed offspring witch are, depending of the themme, worth more then normal pet. There are alot of people that does that as a project to get a 6 visible from a certain themme and sutch but that's all, there is no issu with cross breed per say they just don't get their parents tag. ^-^

Kind of off topic, but I just wanted to let you know from what I've seen of Sylestia, its a very friendly game. I don't think anything you really do (as long as its appropriate and respectful of other players of course) will be really looked down upon.
As long as you are not breaking the rules intentionally, you should be fine doing what you like. They are your pets, after all. And if you aren't hurting anyone else I doubt anyone will mind. Besides, if someone does mind enough to say or do anything that would make you feel bad, I am pretty sure their actions will be looked down upon, not yours.

Just to add on to this; as far as taboo for in game breeding goes I know of only one. Folk might get upset if you dye a tagged themed pet and offer it up for breeding because of the possibility of diluting the color palette of breeding lines. Purebred offspring are easy to track now, but it doesn't track if there is some sort of color anomaly down the line by pet dyes. Now, after saying this, I do want to point out.
If you own the pet, it is yours to do with as you wish. That includes using dye on tagged pets and putting them up for breeding. It is not against any game terms and you should in no way be harassed for it. If you ever decide to do this or if anyone ever gives you grief over pets you own and you're getting nasty/mean/harassing messages (which is highly unlikely because people here are really friendly, also not to be confused with other players offering suggestions/opinions) you just contact Krinadon. Make sure to take screenshots so you have proof.

If you are trying to sell the pets later, then very few will buy them. (Themed mixed with non-themed).
If you are just breeding for yourself, then go for it!--its a very common thing for people to do! :)
For example, Campfire is one of my mission pets. He is a mixed themed and non-themed, but I liked his colors so kept him! I doubt others would want him, as he's rather ordinary. But I like him and have had him for a long time. ^^
Mix and breed away; it is one of the joys of sylestia! Just don't be afraid to release pets you don't want. (There are waay too many 1g unwanted pets that can't sell).
