To add on, stat breeding doesn't /have/ to involve the Lost Grove. You can breed to max stats (base 2000 health and 100 in other stats) without even touching TLG. All you need is philters (prismas are best), perhaps the help of some stat nurtures, and a lot of stable space. Night is an example of a max stat pet. You can see that his base stats are (2000 + 0) and (100 + 0).
If you want /super stats/, you will have to use TLG. Rarer pets (mythical and legendary are best) caught in TLG have something we've termed "wild stats", which come after the + in a pet's base stats. Snowfield was a legendary pet caught in TLG. You can see that his base stats all have numbers after the plus sign. For example, his base health is (105 + 582) and his base intelligence is (10 + 45).
Pets with wild stats can then be bred with max stats. Wild stats are passed down but decrease slightly every generation. With a bit of luck, some philters, and lots of nurtures, you can eventually end up with super stat pets, which have max base stats plus a boost from wild stats. For example, Liora Rayne has base health of (2000 + 376) and base intelligence of (100 + 35). The wild stat bonus has decreased from her great-grandfather Snowfield, but enough remains that she's a super stat pet.
Hope this is helpful ^.^

It certainly is a slow process, but rewarding if you can finish it.
As Encryption said above, Xav and Sarah would be good people to ask if you have questions. They're both pretty experienced as max stat breeders. Xav is also knowledgeable about super stats.
Kaita, Kalores, AliceHearts, Cyradis4, GoldGryphon, and Theafy are some other people I know of who have done max stat projects.

Hi Midnight!^^
Max stats are fun to do, but they take a looong time!
(About a year just on the stat boosting part, after you've gotten the traits you want!)
It's also expensive, taking around 30-40 prismatic philters and a handful of gender swappers.
So it's not worth doing to make gold, but can be very rewarding for the challenge! :D
Here is a directory list of people selling all sorts of max stats:

You can make "superstats" by breeding max stat pets with lost grove (wild stat) pets. But this is another process, and (at least for me) took an awful lot of prismas.
