Can pet deys fail

Pet dyes will always change the colour, but as with essences, the colour won't necessarily be accurate. There's a fair amount of colour swing with lessers, and far less but still some swing with greaters.
(but you can use an infinite amount of pet dyes on a pet so a failure isn't a permanent failure)
