If I clearly state that 'by buying a pet' from list I made then the person cant release the pet, does that align with a 'contract' or am I just out of luck?

Once you sale a pet you have no control on what the new owner may do to it unless the 'sale' is temporary (pet storage, testing, borrowing a team member for an event ...).

To quote Krin:
"there is an exception to this. The exception is when, prior to the sale of the pet, the buyer and seller come to some sort of written agreement (that takes place somewhere on Sylestia) where a certain set of conditions will take place before/after the sale. The number one example of this would be "selling" pets to a specific buyer so that they can Genetically Test the pet and then "sell" the pet back to the original seller. Under these circumstances, the buyer is "under contract" and must oblige to whatever it is that they agreed to do before the sale in a timely manner. Doing anything but would be considered scamming on behalf of the buyer (or the seller in some circumstances)."

The example there is a temporary "sale" like Cian mentioned. I'm not sure how far that would extend, though I would very much like to know.
I'm curious too. Was your pet listed for public sale? It's possible the buyer didn't see your request if it was in a thread and the pet was for public sale. Afaik a lot of releasers check profiles, so that might be a good good place to ask politely that people not release their purchases.

The quote is only for temporaty sale, it dosn't apply to your situation if you sell the pet without entending to get it back after a said period of time. To avoid getting your pets releassed you can :
1. avoid setting pets for 100g or less
2. make more controled breeding to limit the amount of dishwasher pets you could produce
3. recherch what would be the real value of a pet, this in term will prevent them from becoming too common
keep in mind that pets that have no visible traits or bad coloring will be at higher risk to be releass to lower the number of unwanted pets in sale. In those cases i would recomend you to releass them yourself instead, this way you can reclame them later if you realy want too and if they are above 42 days old you get a slight pet bonus in the lost grove witch is alwais nice to have. ^-^

Pets that are released can always be brought back with diamonds. There are also sometimes incentives to releasing a pet. Releasing a pet over 42 days old will give you an egg bonus in the Lost Grove. Some fests also have release contests or prizes that can only be obtained through releasing pets.

also, I'm pretty sure that quote means, when it says "written agreement", it means explicitly written and agreed upon by both players, like, in PMs or a thread, rather than just written by the seller somewhere- since if the pet is listed for public sale, there's every chance a buyer will never look at a thread or a profile.
Releasing a cheap pet that's been bought off of advanced search isn't scamming the seller.
