I'm quite new around here, and I'm wondering if there's any chance of successfully catching sylestises in the seasonal festival areas?

Yes there is.
But save your traps for the themed pets-they appear in the battle log as "Rare enemy" and they can be a ny of the available themeds. They're kinda hardto find and randomly appear so pay attention to those!

additionally, sylesti can only be caught with traps equal to or higher than their rarity (eg, green traps catch white and green star pets but not blue etc.)
