Would dying a themed pet change anything other than the colors of the pet? Like, for example, make it not a theme anymore? This is probably a very dumb question but I have no clue.

it will still have the tag. but, themes are basicly pets w/ the same color pallet so dying them.. kinda ruins it

Well, If I had a pet with updatable colors and wanted to dye it with only one or a couple of the new pallet colors, would that still be considered 'ruining' the theme?

yes, old color palet are considerated 'collector' so they are still fine and part of the themme but as soon as a dye is apply on a themme in any way other then to force said pet to update it's official coloring, this ruin the themme coloration and so ruin your themmed pet.

Technically speaking, dying a tagged pet (G1/PB) doesn't do anything outside of change the colours and give it the "this pet can have its colours updated" note/button.
It doesn't make it 'not themed' tag-wise, though it won't be considered as the Theme by other players- however, it is less of an issue now that the option is given to reset the colours. Like, what's the problem? If someone wants to undo the dyeing of a theme they can just... do that??
Aside from that, I'm sure many projects have and still do use PB themed bloodlines so it really isn't so much of an issue there either if you ask me (once upon a time people couldn't even make and issue of it if a project was resultant of PB bloodlines since you could only check if something was PB by scouring its entire bloodline)
The only time updating the colours will really change anything from prior to the pet being dyed is if it is, as Cian noted, if the pet was originally from a retired version of a colour set of the theme (eg, a colour-set from before a revamp that got updated to account for alterations, or one of the themes that were just altered For Reasons, like the Tiger Lily Aeri
(original TL aeri vs new
))

Okay, so here is my problem; I currently have an original Black Velvet Petunia Lupora...
And I'm not satisfied with the yellow mane. I want to dye it a dark purple. If I died it one of the purples from the original (or its own) pallet, would that be ruining it? I do not plan on updating the colors, I just want it to have more purple.

My reasoning is this: Are you planning on selling that pet? If not, then dye away, it doesn't matter whether it 'ruins' the theme or not, it is your pet, and as said above, you can always revert back (though don't know if that particular theme was one with updated colors) and if you decide to sell, the new owner can revert back.
If you are planning on selling the pet (which it doesn't sound like it) then, yes, it would 'ruin' the theme and probably should save your dyes for a different pet.
(and btw, when I read the title, I thought this was going to be about themes that were slowly becoming harder to obtain because small population size and accounts going inactive)
