So... I bred the a Frostkeeper Aeri and a Dawnbreaker and got... a Mistwarden Aeri????

This makes no sense whatsoever. Can someone please explain this to me?

Its a new thing! Thats how you get Mistwarden Aeris.

Mistwarden aeridini are what you get for crossing a gen1 Frostkeeper and a gen1 Dawnbreaker. If you wanted a non-themed random-colour offspring of the two you'll need to use at least one gen2 of those themes (not possible yet since none of them are old enough)

They're the "very special and benevolent result" mentioned in this paragraph of the Easter Event Overview: "Lastly, many Sylestiologists have theorized that the unification of these clans would bring about a very special and benevolent result. So who knows what to expect should one unite the clans through some sort of eternal bond!"

(Mistwarden are also the first and only theme for which there are no gen1 tagged pets, and summarily cannot have Mutators or Theme Disruptors used on them at all)
