This is probably a stupid question but where do you get them? Can they ever fail to locate a trait?

You can get a Exceptional genetic testing kit from the diamond shop and if I remember correctly cost 1000 diamonds when not on sale. Occasionally you can get a Genetic Test Kit on the broker for gold but those are rare and can be pricey. There is always a free genetic testing service being run by someone if that helps. As far as I am aware the genetic testing kits cannot fail to locate a trait. Traits can be hidden though under another trait but that will be in purple and the trait that it is being hidden by is writen. Example: https://www.sylestia.com/view/pets/?petid=4872051 Green is carried, Blue is visiable, purple is hidden.

Wow ok thank you, very informative. Are the genetic testing services found on forums somewhere? Or is it like NPCs in cities

They can be found in the groups, guilds, and services forum. There are some free ones and others you have to pay for. Most are free though. Some members do not post that they are willing to test on the forums (such as myself) but you can ask them to genetic test if they have it on their profiles that they will test pets.

Just one tiny correction to Starpup's excellent information:
The exceptional genetic test kit is 1,000 diamonds when on sale (usually during a festival's diamond sale) and 1,500 diamonds regularly (like right now).

Some do. Some save up their gold and buy diamonds on the currency exchange from other players that spend money on the site lol. Either way you go about it, having an infinite testing kit is very helpful if you intend to do a lot of breeding. If you intend to do a lot of capturing of wild sylesties, getting the infinite scanner (same prices as the test kit) might be a better investment (since other people can't scan wild sylesties for you).
