Hello, this is my 1000th post about projects, and I was just thinking if I should start one or not, so here are some things I need to clear up:
1. How do you start a project exactly?
2. How do you get the sylesti to the design you wanted exactly? (I'm not gonna be doing a max stat, so just the pretty looking ones is what I'm looking for)
3. Where do the offspring go?
4. Tips?
I might post here some more if I have any more questions ^^

I was the same way in the beginning too. Lol
So this is how I did it.
************
1. How do you start a project exactly?
Decide on a favorite Pet you have or you want to get.
2. How do you get the sylesti to the design you wanted exactly? (I'm not gonna be doing a max stat, so just the pretty looking ones is what I'm looking for)
The answer to this question is a little tough.
After you pick your Pet that you want to do Your Project on, you need to decide on what it is you want to Change or Enhance. Once you have put all your thoughts together, it's time to focus on gathering up Gold. Depending on how much Change you want to do to your Pet will determine how much Gold you will spend.
But have no worries, there are Thread posts for Project Helpers if you look around.
3. Where do the offspring go?
Well that depends. Do you want to start a Project just for yourself for Breeding purl to sell? Or Will this Project be just something fun for you to do?
4. Tips?
Start saving up your Gold to start gathering about 2-3 Dyes and about 2-3 Greater and Lesser Mutators.
*********
These answers are based on how I started. But the bottom line is.....It's pretty much Trail and Error. Lol
Good luck and have lots of fun

Best, most comprehensive guide to project breeding (plus Xav is really on the ball answering any specific questions you might have that aren't covered in her guide)
My own answers to your questions, however (since I have many, many projects completed XD):
1. To start a project you need at least three unrelated pets that cover all the traits you want in your final pair (this applies whether you're doing a 2v project or a 6v).
2. To get the final product looking just the way you want to, you will likely have to do several generations of breeding. Always keep the offspring with the highest number of trait slots filled (that have the correct traits, in case you are not using generated pets that only have the traits you want). A four carry pet is more valuable for breeding your next generation than a 2 visible one. When you get to the end of the breeding part of your project and have all the traits you want visible, you may need pet dyes to correct colours that do not match what you wanted originally.
3. The offspring from your breeding can go anywhere you want. You can keep them, sell them, or release them. Typically pets with a low number of visibles or all carries don't sell very well though. Offspring from your final pair? Again, up to you. You can keep them, sell them, or release them. Or just not breed any offspring from the final pair at all, if you just want the project result for yourself ^.^
4. Make sure you really love the end result. You are going to see possibly hundreds of offspring for this project as you breed along, and most projects done from scratch take 6 months or more to complete. That's a long time to be looking at variations of the same pet, so if you're not in love with the end result, you may get bored in the middle, and that can be a waste of time and gold/money.

1. Just pick a set of traits & colors you like (They can be ones on a themed pet you like (and have, obviously) or a non-themed one you have) and put the design in the Generator & tweak it as needed.
2. Two possible ways.
.Try to find a pair (or multiple pairs) of pets with most (or even better, all) of the traits you want, then breed them until you get the trait combination you want. They can either be ones you already have, ones you buy (In hindsight, I dont recommend doing too much of this. More on why later.), or one (or more) you already have & one (or more) another player has (If you breed one of your pets with someone elses pet, you get the eggling that results from it.).
. Buy multiple pet essences and create the pet(s) in the Generator, with the desired traits either all visible, all carried, or, if you have Mystical or Enhanced ones, some combination of the two. The number of essences you need depends on how many visible traits you want the pet in question to have. These two guides explain all of this in more detail:
Pet Essences
https://www.sylestia.com/forums/?thread=51639
3. Your hatchery, until theyre adults, at which point they will go to your stable, unless you release them before that.
4. More of a cautionary tale than actual advice: Ill explain why I said you shouldnt buy breeders for a project too much. I personally have a bunch of projects I want to do (most of which I came up with all at the same time), so being excited to start them, I bought, over time, several different pets to use as breeders. Now, combined with (1) just collecting the species I like, and (2) actively participating in the main pet-related parts (e.g. Capturing/adopting themeds while exploring the fest zone & themed pet growing/creating) of fests like the current one, I now more or less permanently have a Stable that is always on the verge of being full, so I cant even start any of the projects I came up with 8/. I didnt want to use the essence method, because doing that takes a lot of time & gold, as essences arent readily available (Read: inexpensive & easy to get). What I probably should have done instead is only buy a few pets from other players, then breed those and/or any I personally have with some other players pets that had the traits I wanted.

Here's a list of project types and how to do them :)
A. Essence Projects (also known as Personal Projects)
Essence Projects take a lot of time and depend on their looks to sell. They aren't themed so most people won't buy unless they have just an AMAZING design OR they are maxed out :)
Step 1: Create a design you like in the generator; don't forget to save it!
Step 2: Gather essences of that species, any type works but enhanced works best for me. Gather as many as possible, but you need AT LEAST 3
Step 3: Go to the generator and find your design. Use your essences to generate pets with that color palette but try covering as many traits as possible; meaning don't use visible traits use carried. That way you can cover 2 traits with a regular and 4 traits with enhanced/mythical. *make sure you have a 1 male to 2 female ratio!*
Step 4: When you generate the pets the colors will probably be a little off. This step is optional but basically you dye your pets to make their colors correct.
Step 5: Breeding time! :) I'm not a pro at breeding so check out this guide for help. Your goal is to get 1 breedable pair (2 if you want to make the project max stat later) with all of the traits visible.
Step 6: Selling your offspring. If you want to protect your project then sell your offspring infertile. Don't look at me for pricing though; that's one of my weak points haha
B. Themed Projects
Themed Projects generally sell very well =U= although they do take a lot of time and effort. They'll sell even better if they have restricted traits!
Step 1: Pick a themed that you want to make a project out of
Step 2: Go to the generator and copy the color palette onto there. (yes it may take a while) After you have done that, choose what traits you want it to have.
Step 3: Gather pets of that theme, make sure you cover all of the traits.
Step 4: Breeding time! (again yes) go to Xav's Breeding guide (link in the essence section) for breeding tips; don't look at me! Once you have 1 (or 2) breedable 6v pair your project is done!
Step 5: It's time to sell your offspring! You should ALWAYS sell infertile if your doing a themed project. 100k seems to be a reasonable price. I think.
C. Dye Projects
Dye Projects are one of the easiest and least confusing types of projects! But they do require lots of nurturing.
Step 1: You can choose to dye a personal project or a theme. I personally reccomend you dye a 4v majestic theme; they tend to sell best. Anyway, choose something you would like to dye.
Step 2: Make sure you have a breedable pair. Go to the generator and make a color palette and then add on the traits that your pair has. If you like it, save it and that's step 2 done!
Step 3: Basically all you have to do is nurture. I recommend doing 1k nurtures a day; that's what I do.
Step 4: Once you have 1k scales go to the scale shop and buy a pet dye. Then open up 2 tabs: the generator and your pet that you want to dye. In the generator, find your design. On the pet's profile page click "genetic philters". Then find the choice that says "lesser pet dye" and click it. Go to the generator and copy the color there onto the pet's page. Make sure your dying the right color slot!
Step 5: Selling your offspring; again try to sell infertile. Although if your only selling from one pair it's ok to sell them fertile... I guess
D. Max Stat Projects
The hardest, most expensive, and most profitable projects...
I'm honestly can't explain this without pictures, so go to this guide to learn how to do it :)
Hope this helps! Actually, this had better help because this took forever to type up >:)
