I'm coming back to this game after four years, I don't remember how exploring works anymore and I keep dying at the garden of the magnates but I don't have trouble with the other areas I think. This is my team(linked images):

Are they equipped okay? I have money so I can probably afford slightly better stuff if anyone has recommendations! What is my goal? Where am I trying to go exactly? Also, I tried to fight like a fairy looking lady in the seasonal festival to get a treasure chest or something but I barely dented her health and got killed immediately : ( I want to get to level 70 and I don't know where to go from where I am rn. Thanks for any help!

Their equipment can definitely be improved but the main problem is that they don't have selected elements and proficiency points.

For a starter I would suggest a basic tank/healer/canon combo

A tank: Earth, Water or shadow and in some cases light. They should be in spot 1 of your party as they take the most of the damage. Points should be in health, agility and strength/intelligence but it depends on which type of tank you select

Healer: Light, proficiency points should be in intelligence at the level they are at, add on dex once they get more points.

Canon: fire or air, fire can hit multiple enemies but air can hit really hard on one. Points should be in strength/intelligence and dexterity.

As for help with the story line, your mostly just wanting to work your way through it. There's plenty to do once you get to the lost grove and just a small warning the LG is a very tough area filled with big surprises! I was in the garden of magnates a very long time ago so I don't remember very well but for wave battles you typically just keep focusing on one of the enemies over and over again until you've killed all of them.

mm, if you were last on four years ago, you missed the Proficiency Overhaul that happened in 2017.
Level up points and the old proficiency system were removed in exchange for the new system, old equips became basically obsolete with the introduction of the revamped versions (your are old- take your StarFire's lv45 epic myrmidon armor, which gives 33 to str and dex and 17 to int and agi. New versions of the same equip give 40 dex, 33 str, and 20 int and agi)
Attacks were also overhauled.

Because the whole prof system changed, all pets were reset to having no assigned elements or proficiency points- so yours, currently have no assigned elements or prof points.
It used to be that you got level up points every level and one prof point every five for a total of 12 at lv60 which could be put into a stat for a static increase.
The new system instead has 1 prof at 0, then gives 1 at lv30, 60, 65, and 70. You can put a max of three into any of HP, Str/Int, Dex, and Agi, and the amount of statpoints it gives to your stats scales based on how many points you put in the stat and the pet's level: a lv0 with 1 attack/dex/agi gets +20 to the stat, while a lv50 gets +147 for that same 1 point, and a lv70 gets +299.
A lv50 with 2 prof points in a stat gets +221, where at lv70 they'll get 449. etc.

So your pets currently have no assigned elements or proficiencies, and looking at their equips I can't actually begin to guess what their elements were because they just have a kind of homogeneous mishmash with no specialization apparent. If one had all evoker equips I could say "ah, this was probably a fire attacker or perhaps a light healer" but they just have a random collection of evoker and myrmidon and crusader and warden and disciples.

Pearlwish went a bit into battle party set- Typical parties consist of:
Tanks that are usually Earth, Water, or Shadow (less commonly Light)
Healers that are Light (or Buffers that are Water, though they're somewhat rare)
Attackers that are Air or Fire (on occasion Shadow)

Earth, Water and Air are Physical elements, Shadow, Light, and Fire are Magical elements

Physical elements use Strength, and thus get Assassin or Myrmidon gear; Assassin for tanks as it boosts Agility (which gives Evasion and Defense), Myrmidon for Attackers, as it boosts Dexterity (critical hit chance and accuracy)

Magical elements use Intelligence and get Illusionist or Evoker; Illusionist (int/agi) for tanks, Evoker (int/dex) for Attackers.
Light healers typically get given Evoker as well.

(once you hit lv60 you can use Lost Grove equip varieties which are better than non-lg equips and have different stat-spreads)

(at lv50, you can use lv50 legendary equips, which you can get from lv50 Mission Reward satchels- or the trade broker, where there's usually a decent number of them for decent prices))

If your plot progression is at Garden of the Magnates (you can check your quest log), it has a lot of Wave battles (which have more than three total enemies), the general trick is aiming for a single enemy slot and to just keep attacking it so that it bottlenecks the stronger enemies so you only ever have one to deal with at once (for this reason it's easier if you don't use a fire pet for the area)

Thank you both so much! This is super helpful! I don't think I ever had elements assigned? Maybe I just forgot but yeah I have no idea what they might have been, I don't remember elements at all so I might have missed it of forgotten to do it (I think I stopped doing explore a bit during the end of me actively playing) : (
Well, I'll see what I can do from here on out, hopefully I can get my mess of a party into shape! : )

edit: looking at the elements now, they look familiar so I just forgot they existed lol. I think my starter was air for sure. : )
